Agribusiness is complex work. It only holds together when the ecosystem around the farmer is strong: actors who show resilience, discipline, commitment, hard work and consistency, season after season. That is the thinking behind how NUTOFA chooses who it works with.
This week the cooperative had the pleasure of a working conversation with the General Manager of Car & General Uganda. Car & General is the dealer for Kubota tractors, the same brand as the three units the cooperative received through the Microfinance Support Centre in June. Their portfolio also covers ACE, DEVELON, Toyota, MRF tyres and tubes, Piaggio, Briggs & Stratton power products and Ingersoll Rand, among others.
Why does a dealer relationship matter this much? Because a tractor is only as good as the spares and service behind it. A machine kept running on genuine parts and skilled hands earns for years. One run into the ground on grey-market parts is a one-season asset. A direct line to the Kubota dealer means the cooperative’s fleet, and the member-owned machines on its roster, stay in the field where they earn.
The two sides look forward to working together as the cooperative operationalises its agricultural mechanization service model across Northern Uganda: vetted machines, certified operators, genuine spares and fair rates, from land opening through to post-harvest handling.
A word of thanks to Abola Isaac, one of the leaders of Kololo Youth Farmers Group in Lakang, for sparing his time for this visit.
